The most common alcohol intervention that we may have heard about is alcohol anonymous. Not only do they stand as a centre of intervention for alcohol, but they represent the national task force for alcohol abuse prevention. Although you may not see many alcohol intervention programs around in your area, the chances are that a sub group or group of alcohol anonymous will be present in operation in your area.

The first thing to ensure as a therapist is to know how to conserve privacy. This is especially important for alcohol intervention programs if you are practicing in the same area that you are residing. If you are residing in a non urban area, the chances of you knowing each and every individual by name or face is much likely than it would be if you were living in an urban area. Either way, when you work on alcohol intervention programs, you need to swear in to secrecy.
The second thing is, you will need to be properly qualified. Whether it is a psychology related qualification, counselling certificate or medical qualification, you will need to be proper trained in alcohol intervention programs before you could begin with the interventions. If you were just trained as a counsellor, you will need to work under a psychologist for long enough in order to shadow them while gaining experience.

When it comes to the methods used in alcohol intervention programs, the kind of techniques will definitely be based on the gravity of the problem. Some people may need basic intervention while the others will require prolonged interventions.

While aversive therapy and associated drugs may be prescribed to keep individuals off alcohol, most people would prefer to follow non-medical, non-invasive methods of alcohol intervention to get over their addictions. Besides, medical and psychological intervention, some people may also need legal and other official assistance and guidance in the course of alcohol intervention to stop them from going in to relapses. Especially for men, alcohol interventions without providing solutions for other issues (debt, mistrust between trust, jealousy) that they may hold against others, is essential before treating the addiction itself.

Group therapy works miracle on some alcohol abusers however research indicate that women are more likely to benefit from group therapy alcohol interventions than men. The active involvement and support of family members on alcohol intervention programs are essential for the success of any individual. So as a therapist, you will provide holistic therapy, rather than individualized alcohol intervention therapies.
